Jess writes:
Jess - The Boys"I have appeared in over 30 movies but The Boys was certainly one of my most memorable experiences.
I had been a Teddy Boy. I had come from Peabody Building. I saw Barney Day as an extension of myself in many ways.
By the time we came to make the film, the fashions had changed and some Teddy Boys were now wearing Italian-style; shorter jackets and stiff collars. I thought of the cigarette holder as being a being an extension of my flamboyant teenage character.
On the first day of filming, we ran through our first scene and the director Sidney Furie said it wasn’t believable enough. He ordered that we tear up the script and improvise, which suited us as we came from The Actor’s Workshop (Stanislavsi’s method school of acting). Robert Morley embraced it, and treated us like his sons and in fact used to take us for tea and scones in a local tea shop.
Richard Todd was not a great fan of the improvisational style. I believe it was his last film under contract with Associated British.
It was a wonderful experience for me, as I could drive from Brixton where I lived in those days to Elstree in just over an hour. I went home every night and told mum of my adventures that day.
Sadly, we lost Dudley Sutton recently and Ronald Lacey in 1991, which leaves just two of The Boys myself and Tony Garnett.
When the movie was finished, the director Sid went off to America and made movies with big stars like Brando and Warren Beatty.
I always thought that we were doing something special. It was early days of realism in film. Even using a popular group The Shadows for the soundtrack was ground breaking at the time.
I’m thrilled that The Boys is having a resurgence and seems to considered to be something of a masterpiece."
